Treatment of Angina

Treatment of Angina

All chest pain should be checked by a doctor. If your doctor thinks that you have unstable angina or that your angina is related to a serious heart condition, they may recommend the following tests and procedures:

EKG (Electrocardiogram)

An electrocardiogram — abbreviated as EKG or ECG — is a test that measures the electrical activity of the heartbeat. With each beat, an electrical impulse (or “wave”) travels through the heart.

Stress Testing

A stress test, sometimes called a treadmill test or exercise test, helps a doctor find out how well your heart handles work. As your body works harder during the test, it requires more oxygen, so the heart must pump more blood.

Blood Tests

Cardiac enzymes (including troponin and creatine kinase), C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, homocysteine, lipoproteins, triglycerides, brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and prothrombin.

Coronary Angiography and Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac catheterization (cardiac cath or heart cath) is a procedure to examine how well your heart is working. A thin, hollow tube called a catheter is inserted into a large blood vessel that leads to your heart. View an illustration of cardiac catheterization.

Computed Tomography Angiography

CT is a noninvasive test that uses X-rays to make pictures of your heart. Modern CT scanners (multidetector CT, or MDCT) work very fast and detailed. They can take images of the beating heart, and show calcium and blockages in your heart arteries.

Cardiac procedures

f you've had a heart attack, you may have already had certain procedures to help you survive your heart attack and diagnose your condition. For example, many heart attack patients have undergone thrombolysis, a procedure that involves injecting a clot-dissolving agent to restore blood flow in a coronary artery (View an illustration of coronary arteries).

Cardiac Rehab

Following a diagnosis of heart attack or heart failure, or after a procedure such as angioplasty or heart surgery, your doctor may recommend you participate in a cardiac rehabilitation program. Cardiac rehab is a medically supervised program designed to help improve your cardiovascular health — and it’s a very important step in your recovery.
